Where do you start with the loss of such a good friend like Roger? He has been there for over forty years as a friend and a supporter. He will be sadly missed by my sons, wife and myself. Our condolences to his wife and family.
Sincerely,
Marty, Brenda, Michael, & Christopher Brown |

I have been a customer of Long and McQuade since 1970. Roger was a welcome sight every time I came to the store, and I pestered him endlessly about replacement parts and weird repair jobs. Roger always dealt with my questions in a friendly way, even when he was busy. Sometimes he would pull my leg with some wacky answer, then wait to see if I caught him trying to snow me.
Over the last few years, Roger would occasionally be the fill-in-guy behind the counter at the Bass Centre, and would have to field a variety of questions about my account, my bass, my amp, or some rumour I had heard about something I just had to have right now.
Roger would admit that he didn't know the exact string sizes I should use, or the details of some bass amplifier. He also didn't get along with the computer very well, and some of my information requests had to wait. But he was open and honest, and tried to get me the stuff I needed, and i always had the feeling that he somehow cared......not an easy thing to do in the wsorld of retail sales for as many years as Roger did it.
Even though Roger has been helping me for 36 years, I remember him mainly for the last few. He continually impressed me with his easy-going and dignified approach to providing people with musical instruments, like he was on top of his game and able to float above it. He is one of my best memories of Vancouver, and I will miss him at the store.
All the Best Roger,

I would wonder into L&M during the
early 70s down on Granville St “ the old location”. I still remember the store and me purchasing a Black Les Paul, a big deal for me at that time. I am sure that Roger has watched quite a few of us grow up. It was probably quite amusing to him and he was probably surprised that some of us actually survived. After he retired and was still coming into L&M part time, and if by chance I was there, we would always have a few words. If he gave praise you certainly felt it. I just found out today of his passing
I was one who always commented on his youthful looks “As in never aging”
He blamed it all on the beer.
God bless him

To Roger,
As the "old boss" and first drummer for The Casuals, I'll remember the first gigs, loves, laughs, Chaffey Street, bull whips, & those chestnuts exploding on an open fire. We will miss you always.
Say hi to all the rockers....Johnny, Waylon, Elvis, Buck & Hank...What a great jam!

I first met Roger in 1972 as an L&M customer and it wasn't long before we became friends. In 1980 he helped me learn the ropes when i started working with him at the store. Everyone will miss his unique sense of humour, singing, song writing and other talents.
"Quite the man they used to say, could do anything he wants" is a line from one of great songs, and he could. He'll be dearly missed by his colleagues, customers and friends alike.

We first met Roger through Ray and Gerry. We had a lot of jams and parties, all great music and great fun. Roger had a dry, great sense of humour. He also helped me pick out the Martin guitar that I got for Don's birthday. We'll never let that go. Miss you very much Roger. Love to you Carol Anne, from Don and Yvonne Hemming. |

I have the pleasure to have known Roger for over 20 years. We lived on different sides of the country and I looked forward to seeing Roger when I visited the Vancouver store. We always had a good laugh together. He was a hard worker in the store and willing to do whatever job was needed to make the store look and be better.
He was the king of selling acoustic guitars , in particular high end acoustic guitars. He knew all about them and loved them.
I will miss seeing Roger on my next visit and never forget the laughs we shared. |

Roger was one-of-a-kind alright..when I first started working with him on 4th ave L&M I was somewhat dumfounded how he kept selling these nice acoustics [mostly Martins of course]that I didn't even know we had..from the basement of the store..there he'd be in the dark, dingy corner with a customer extolling the virtues of another fine guitar that would never see the light of day until HE sold it!!It worked out well for him until the flood[s]!..another time a customer brought in a guitar to trade that was signed by Ritchie Sambora...foolish me thinking it would be a bonus when we sell it ;especially to a gal..after explaining to Rog who he was[..no he never played in the Kingston Trio but he's sold a few discs ,Rog]we figured all was good..til a couple hours later when I go to show it to a potential buyer..signature gone!I wonder if Elvis's signature would have suffered the same fate?..from years of working beside Roger I learned alot from him about the things that matter and those that don't..his genuine interest in all the people he met [green-haired rockers possibly excepted] was an eye-opener in this business and rubbed off on all of us who had the pleasure to be his friends and co-workers...now everybody..can we at least try all these guitars at once in the same key!..for Rog |

I was always impressed with Roger's good humour and patience with the scores of guitar solos being played all at the same time by the up and coming rock 'n roll stars down at L&M.
Roger would smile and sit down on one of those bar stool chairs in the accoustic geetar rooms and pluck a few notes. The noise and chaos in that store would have driven a lessor man mad.
Roger just smiled. A good guy. Best to his family and friends
